If you have ever came to a locks that had no screws no set screw and no de. That s because modern door hardware uses a hidden mechanism called a detent to fasten the doorknob that can only be released using a small screwdriver tip or the end of a paper clip depending on your style of hardware. These handles are available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement different decorating styles. A lever door handle is used in place of a traditional doorknob on many modern locksets.

The detent is a spring activated pin concealed or small thin plate attached to the spindle that protrudes into a doorknob notch which prevents rotation. Interior door knobs however will often have the screws hidden from view for a cleaner look on the door. When this occurs it s an easy matter to simply tighten these screws to snug up the door again. Occasionally the door handle may instead use a different screw type such as a phillip s head screw.

With round doorknobs though you may need to remove the knob in order to make the faceplate mounting screws accessible to your screwdriver. Insert the tip of the wrench into the screw and rotate the tool counter clockwise until the faceplate is free to slide off. I show how i tightened my loose door handle that is made by kwikset. On lever style handles you can almost always access the mounting screws easily. Most door knobs attach to the door with long retaining screws that are visible.
